Binance co-founder Changpeng “CZ” Zhao strongly denied reports indicating he agreed to testify against TRON founder Justin Sun as part of his plea agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice. Zhao took to social media in response to such claims and indicated they originated in an orchestrated smear campaign against him.

Zhao strongly rejected allegations in a Wall Street Journal report about him, noting that even had he testified to government authorities, he would not face jail time as part of an insidious plot against him. Zhao preemptively responded via social media by suggesting the report could be part of an orchestrated assault against him and suggesting it is part of a targeted campaign targeting him personally. Zhao’s statement came amid reports suggesting Binance executives may attempt to influence US regulatory oversight over their exchange.
Clarifying Legal Charges
Zhao made clear to industry peers the nature of his charges against him by distinguishing between anti-money laundering violations and money laundering violations to emphasize his conviction. After pleading guilty, he served four months in prison before concluding his sentence in September 2024 and has since resumed professional pursuits.
Justin Sun Responds to Allegations
Justin Sun responded to the reports in the Wall Street Journal by stressing his strong bond with Zhao. He described Zhao as his mentor and friend and highlighted their open communication channels – including with the United States Department of Justice – while also emphasizing their partnership through T3 Financial Crime Unit initiative in blockchain security.
