Cameron Winklevoss, co-founder of cryptocurrency exchange Gemini, announced on February 24 that the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) had finished its investigation and decided not to recommend enforcement action against Gemini. His announcement provided clarity as it confirmed what had already been written in their letter regarding any enforcement actions being pursued against Gemini by its staff.
End of SEC Scrutiny for Gemini
Gemini’s two-year investigation culminated in a Wells Notice roughly nine months ago, signaling the possibility of legal action. Winklevoss expressed relief with its conclusion but expressed disappointment with its enormous financial burden – costing millions in legal fees alone.
Winklevoss expressed concern with the Securities and Exchange Commission’s aggressive tactics towards the cryptocurrency industry, noting how such actions hurt businesses as well as hinder innovation and productivity within it.
Calls for SEC Reforms
Recent developments suggest a relaxation in the SEC’s attitude toward the crypto market, evidenced by their decision to drop investigations and charges against major players such as Coinbase Global Inc. and DeFi platform Uniswap. This shift may be linked to shifting political dynamics as well as more accommodating regulations in the near future.
Winklevoss took this opportunity to advocate for significant reforms within the SEC in order to ensure fair treatment in the future. He suggested that firms be compensated threefold if investigations are initiated without established regulations, and employees responsible for baseless enforcement actions should be fired immediately and their misconduct made public on its website.
